Disgusted by behaviour of local fans

I WATCHED a badminton match at Bukit Jalil Stadium recently and was extremely disgusted with the way Malaysians conducted themselves during the matches when our players were on the court.

It is all right to support one’s countrymen but totally wrong to jeer at their opponents.

This unbecoming act of incivility was repeatedly committed during the Men’s doubles match when Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong played against Chai Biao-Zhang Nan.

When the Chinese pair took a slightly longer time to be ready, the crowd jeered in a loud chorus.

When one of the Chinese players approached the umpire to get permission to change his racquet, the home fans booed again.

As host of an international tournament, such behaviour reflects very poorly on our people.

Nobody takes to being belittled by their host and looks forward to returning in future.

It is undoubtedly very fulfilling and exciting to be cheering and chanting along with other supporters.

But we have to draw the line at that.

No more behaving rudely towards our opponents, so that if or when our players emerge as winners, they can do so with great dignity.

EMBARRASSED FAN,

Petaling Jaya.
