Give cinema-goers a break — they need it badly

I WAS in Bombay last week and watched two movies — Avatar and 3 Idiots — at the cinemas there. While Avatar is a Hollywood visual treat, 3 Idiots is an educational, yet fun-filled Bollywood film.

On my return to Penang, I watched these two delightful movies again with my family.

Both films have a running time of more than two and a half hours. During the screening I saw some viewers getting up to go to the restroom halfway into the show. But the others, despite having a full bladder, may well have been sitting through it so that they would not miss out on any part of the story.

In Bombay, the experience was different. Every movie shown, irrespective of the length, would have a compulsory five-minute break. From the health point of view, this is a good practice as viewers may empty their bladders and stretch their bodies and thus help to avoid the possibility of developing discomforts such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and a sore back!

Before the movies continue, trailers of up-coming movies are shown.

By having a break, all viewers would have a better movie-watching experience. Cinema operators in Malaysia should consider having a similar break, especially for movies that are more than two and a half hours long.
