Abolish subsidy, put funds to better use

THERE have been reports in the media recently about the new system proposed for the purchase of petrol effective from May 1. Among the proposals are the limited purchase at one time for foreign cars owners, higher fuel prices for bigger cars and the possible use of Mykad for every purchase.

As in the past, we already have a lot of laws and regulations but the enforcement and implementation left much to be desired.

Why can’t the Government abolish the petrol subsidy and use the billions of ringgit to build more schools, hospitals, more 1Malaysia clinics and repair damaged public facilities.

Those who can afford to buy cars or motorcycles can surely afford the price of petrol for their vehicles.

If they cannot afford it, then use public transport or car pool with neighbours or friends. There will be fewer cars and motorcycles on the road, thus less traffic jam.

Take away the subsidy and channel the funds to help the hardcore poor.

YUNI ABDULLAH,
Kuala Lumpur.
