I REFER to the speed limit set for the Penang Bridge. It is unrealistic for drivers to slow from 80kph to 70kph and to 60kph over such a short distance. The speed limit of 60kph at mid-span will cause congestion.
It is contended that the low speed will curb accidents. I disagree. This adjustment from high speed to low speed will instead lead to more accidents.
Most drivers hog the overtaking lane even when they are driving at 60kph and below. These are the drivers who contribute to accidents. They should be booked for not observing the rules.
Also, the speed limit should be painted on the road in big bold lettering.
