Wrong way to greet customers

ON a recent trip back to Malaysia, I noticed that many stores at shopping centres have trained their salesgirls to greet customers.

Unfortunately, they have all been taught to say, “You’re welcome”, which should only be said in reply to “Thank you”. They should be greeting shoppers with “Welcome”.

I do not understand how such bad English has managed to spread to stores all over Kuala Lumpur. I noticed that this happens in Singapore, too.

I hope we will be able to correct this before everyone else makes the same mistake and before we are laughed at by tourists!

SHOPPER,

Zurich.
